Sony's compact Zeiss-branded full-frame 35mm prime with optical stabilisation.
The Sony FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Sonnar T* was one of Sony's earliest FE-mount primes, launched in 2013. As a Zeiss-branded lens with the Sonnar optical formula, it provided a compact 35mm option for the new A7 system. At just 120g it is one of the lightest full-frame primes available.
Optical quality is good in the centre with Zeiss T* coating providing excellent contrast. Corners are softer wide open on full-frame, improving by f/5.6. At f/2.8 it is not as fast as modern 35mm primes but the compact size and Zeiss rendering are the selling points.
Sony FE mount only, 49mm filter thread. This has been largely overshadowed by the Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM and Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art which are dramatically better optically. The Samyang AF 35mm f/1.8 FE offers a wider aperture at a lower price.
Moderate value used. Check AF motor and weather seals. The lens is primarily of interest for its extreme compactness — at 120g it adds essentially no weight to the system. For optical quality the newer 35mm alternatives are all better.
