Sony's compact full-frame prime from the G-series, a versatile 40mm for everyday shooting.
The Sony FE 40mm f/2.5 G is part of Sony's compact G-series prime trio launched in 2021 alongside the 24mm f/2.8 G and 50mm f/2.5 G. It provides a versatile 40mm perspective between the classic 35mm and 50mm focal lengths in an extremely compact weather-sealed package.
Optical quality is very good with excellent sharpness and pleasing bokeh from the seven rounded aperture blades. The G designation ensures higher optical standards than consumer lenses. Autofocus via a linear motor is fast, accurate, and near-silent. Build is compact metal and plastic with weather sealing and an aperture ring.
Sony FE mount only, 49mm filter thread shared with the 24mm f/2.8 G and 50mm f/2.5 G for filter sharing. The Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG DN Art offers a wider aperture in a much larger package. The 40mm focal length sits between the more common 35mm and 50mm offerings.
Good value used. Check the aperture ring, AF motor, and weather seals. The 40mm perspective is increasingly appreciated as a natural, versatile focal length. The compact size pairs beautifully with the A7C series for a minimal travel setup.
