Sony's flagship 50mm prime — the G Master f/1.4 delivering reference-class optics in a compact package.

The Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM was released in March 2022 as Sony's G Master standard prime, combining f/1.4 maximum aperture with a 516g body — significantly lighter than competing flagship 50mm primes including the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM at 950g and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art at 670g. G Master designation requires a specified optical standard and applies the XA (eXtreme Aspherical) element manufacturing process. Eleven XD (eXtreme Dynamic) Linear AF actuators provide tracking performance matching Sony's fastest phase-detect AF systems. The lens established a new benchmark for the 50mm class in the Sony FE ecosystem.

The optical design uses 14 elements in 11 groups including two XA aspherical elements for aberration control at f/1.4. Eleven XD Linear AF actuators drive AF with near-instantaneous response and precision for subject tracking. Eleven rounded aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering. 67mm filter thread. Minimum focus distance 0.41m (AF) / 0.38m (MF). Nano AR Coating II reduces ghosting and flare. Dust and moisture resistant construction throughout the barrel. At 516g and 80.6mm diameter x 96mm length, the lens is compact for a GM f/1.4 prime. Full-frame Sony FE mount.

The FE 50mm f/1.4 GM's primary differentiators are the 11-actuator XD Linear AF system and the lightweight-for-class construction. At 516g it is meaningfully lighter than the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and substantially lighter than any competing 50mm f/1.2 lens, making it the practical choice where size and balance matter alongside peak optical quality. The XD Linear AF provides speed and continuous tracking precision suited to fast-moving subject work as well as controlled portrait and studio use. G Master optical correction at f/1.4 delivers sharp results with the smooth 11-blade bokeh characteristic of the G Master line.
