Sony's Zeiss-branded 50mm f/1.4 for FE — Planar formula with T* coating and large aperture.
The Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA Planar T* launched in 2016 as Sony's first premium 50mm f/1.4 for full-frame E-mount. Using the Zeiss Planar optical formula with T* coating, it provided f/1.4 speed before the later 50mm f/1.2 GM.
Optically good — sharp from f/2 with Zeiss Planar rendering at f/1.4. T* coating controls flare. The Planar formula delivers smooth tonal transitions. Direct Drive SSM autofocus — adequate but not as fast as newer XD Linear Motor designs.
Sony FE mount with 72mm filter thread. Approximately 778g — heavy for a 50mm. Dust and moisture resistant. Aperture ring with click/de-click. 11 rounded blades. Focus hold button. Minimum focus distance 45cm.
Available used at mid-range to professional prices. The 50mm f/1.2 GM and 50mm f/1.4 GM are optically superior with faster AF. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is sharper for less. The ZA Planar offers Zeiss character at reduced used prices.
