Sony's compact G-series 50mm f/2.5 — lightweight and sharp with close-focus capability.
The Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G launched in 2021 as part of a compact G-series prime trio alongside the 24mm and 40mm f/2.5. It provides the standard 50mm perspective in a remarkably small package with G-series optical quality.
Optically very good — sharp from f/2.5 across the frame with G-series contrast and rendering. The compact design uses a linear motor for fast, quiet AF. Good close focus at 35cm with 0.18x magnification. Minimal focus breathing for video.
Sony FE mount with 49mm filter thread. Weighs just 174g — incredibly compact. Dust and moisture resistant. 7 rounded aperture blades. De-clickable aperture ring. Focus hold button. Minimum focus distance 35cm.
Available used at mid-range prices. The Sony 50mm f/1.8 is faster and cheaper but larger and less sharp. The 50mm f/1.4 GM is the ultimate but much heavier and more expensive. For photographers who prioritise compact size and G-series quality over maximum aperture speed.
