Sony's Zeiss-branded 55mm prime, a sharp and compact standard lens for full-frame E-mount.

The Sony FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Sonnar T* (SEL55F18Z) was released in 2013 alongside the A7 and A7R as one of the launch lenses for the full-frame FE system. The Zeiss co-design and Sonnar T* designation mark it as a prestige normal prime with specified optical performance targets and T* anti-reflection coating. At 281g and 49mm filter thread it is compact for a full-frame standard prime, enabling a relatively light A7-series body-plus-lens combination.

The optical design uses 7 elements in 5 groups, including three aspherical elements. Nine aperture blades produce smooth circular bokeh. The 49mm filter thread is compact for the 55mm focal length. At 281g the lens is light for a full-frame fast standard prime. Minimum focus distance of 0.5m — longer than some competing 50mm primes, limiting very close portrait and informal subject distances. T* anti-reflection coating reduces ghosting and flare. There is no optical image stabilisation; in-body IBIS on compatible Sony bodies provides stabilisation.

The 55mm full-frame perspective is a slight telephoto of the standard normal focal length — modestly compressing relative to a true 50mm, which is preferred by some portrait photographers for its flattering facial rendering. At f/1.8 the depth of field enables pronounced subject-background separation for portrait work. The Zeiss T* optical design delivers consistent contrast and micro-contrast performance valued for portrait and standard reportage use. The 0.5m MFD is the primary practical constraint for informal close-up work.

On the used market the SEL55F18Z holds moderate used value as the premium normal FE prime. Condition checks: AF motor response across the focus range, front element for coating marks, and T* coating integrity. The Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM is the G Master alternative at significantly higher cost. The Sony FE 50mm f/2.5 G provides a more compact lightweight option at f/2.5. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame and APS-C E-mount bodies.
