Sony's Zeiss-branded 55mm prime, a sharp and compact standard lens for full-frame E-mount.
The Sony FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Sonnar T* was one of the earliest FE-mount primes, launched in 2013. As a Zeiss-branded lens with the classic Sonnar optical design and T* coating, it set a high bar for optical quality in the nascent FE system. It remains one of the sharpest 50mm-class lenses ever made.
Optical quality is exceptional with outstanding sharpness from wide open that rivals much more expensive lenses. The Zeiss Sonnar T* coating delivers excellent contrast and flare resistance. Bokeh is smooth with a distinctive Zeiss rendering character. Build is compact and weather sealed.
Sony FE mount only, 49mm filter thread. The Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art offer wider apertures. The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 is cheaper but optically inferior. The 55mm is often considered the sweet spot of the Sony 50mm-class primes for its balance of quality and size.
Good value used. Check the AF motor and weather seals. The lens is well-built with few common issues. The 55mm focal length is slightly tighter than a traditional 50mm which some find preferable for portraits and others find limiting for general use. Outstanding optical quality for the price.
