Sony's first-generation professional telephoto zoom, the G Master that set the standard.
The Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS (SEL70200GM) was introduced in 2016 as Sony's first G Master constant-aperture telephoto zoom for the full-frame FE system. G Master is Sony's professional optical tier, positioned above the G series and defined by specified MTF performance targets and manufacturing tolerances. Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation is built into the lens barrel; on compatible Sony bodies it cooperates with body IBIS for combined stabilisation effect. The GM II (SEL70200GM2, 2021) replaced the original with a substantially lighter and revised design — approximately 435g lighter at 1045g. This master covers the original SEL70200GM.
The optical design uses 23 elements in 18 groups, including Super ED, ED, and aspherical elements for aberration control across the zoom range. Eleven rounded aperture blades produce smooth circular bokeh. The 77mm filter thread is the G Master professional zoom standard — shared with several G Master primes and the FE 100-400mm GM, enabling filter carry-over across an established Sony professional kit. At approximately 1480g the lens is a substantial handheld carry; a monopod is practical for sustained sports or wildlife sessions. Minimum focus distance is 0.96m. Optical SteadyShot cooperates with body IBIS on compatible Sony bodies. Dust and moisture sealing covers the barrel and mount.
The GM OSS serves professional event, portrait, and sports photography where constant f/2.8 throughout the 70-200mm range is required. Built-in OSS combined with body IBIS on compatible bodies extends handheld capability at the 200mm end in lower light. The 1480g weight is appropriate for professional event and sports use where the lens is mounted and shooting continuously; for lighter travel or hiking configurations the GM II's reduced weight is a meaningful practical advantage. The 70-200mm range covers the full standard professional telephoto spectrum from moderate environmental portraits at 70mm through tight subject isolation at 200mm.
On the used market the original GM OSS is widely available at substantially lower prices than the GM II, reflecting the weight and design differences. Condition checks: OSS operation (listen for activation, observe stabilised viewfinder output), AF tracking response across the full zoom range, and front element for any coating damage. The approximately 435g weight advantage of the GM II is significant for all-day handheld carry. The Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS provides a lighter alternative at the cost of two stops of aperture. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame and APS-C bodies.
