Sony's full-frame telephoto zoom for FE mount — G-series optics with OSS in a practical 70-300mm range.
The Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS launched in 2016 as Sony's first native full-frame telephoto zoom in the 70-300mm range for E-mount. The G designation indicates premium optics from Sony's second-tier lens line, below G Master but above standard.
Optically good — sharp in the centre throughout the range with respectable edge performance. Optical SteadyShot stabilisation is effective, important given the slow maximum aperture at 300mm. Linear motor AF is quiet and compatible with continuous AF tracking.
Sony FE mount with 72mm filter thread. Weighs 854g. Dust and moisture resistant construction. Minimum focus distance 90cm with 0.31x magnification — useful close-up capability. Internal zoom design — barrel does not extend. Focus hold button on barrel.
Available used at mid-range prices. The only native Sony FE 70-300mm option. The Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD is lighter and cheaper but slower. For Sony full-frame users wanting telephoto reach, this remains the G-series option with good all-round performance.
