Sony's affordable full-frame portrait prime with excellent autofocus and smooth bokeh.
The Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 (SEL85F18) was released in February 2017 as an affordable full-frame portrait prime for the Sony E-mount, positioned significantly below the G Master FE 85mm f/1.4 in cost while covering the same classic portrait focal length. The double linear motor autofocus and weather-resistant construction distinguished it from cheaper alternatives at launch. On full-frame bodies the 85mm field of view and f/1.8 maximum aperture provide the background separation and subject isolation associated with portrait photography.
The optical design uses 9 elements in 7 groups. The 67mm filter thread is consistent with several Sony FE primes in the accessible tier, making filter carry-over practical within a multi-prime Sony setup. At 371g the lens is light for a full-frame portrait prime, comfortable for extended portrait sessions. A minimum focus distance of 0.80m suits formal portrait and head-and-shoulders framing without constraining closer environmental portrait work. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh highlights at wider apertures. The double linear motor delivers fast, near-silent autofocus. Build is weather resistant, providing protection in light rain and dusty conditions.
As a portrait prime on full-frame Sony bodies, the 85mm f/1.8 delivers the classic portrait rendering: background compression, f/1.8 subject isolation, and smooth bokeh from the nine rounded blades. At f/1.8 the centre is sharp with gentle falloff to the frame edges; from f/2.8 sharpness is strong and consistent across the frame. Autofocus is fast and reliable for portrait tracking, including eye-detection on A7-series bodies with AI AF support. On APS-C Sony bodies the 127mm equivalent provides a tight telephoto portrait perspective better suited to outdoor or studio work.
On the used market the FE 85mm f/1.8 is one of the strongest value propositions in Sony's FE prime lineup. Condition checks: double linear motor response, aperture blade operation, and weather sealing at the mount for any damage. The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 G Master offers wider maximum aperture and higher optical performance at substantially higher cost. The Samyang/Rokinon AF 85mm f/1.4 is an alternative fast-aperture option at a lower price. For portrait work on the Sony FE system, the 85mm f/1.8 covers the core use case at the most accessible price point.
