Sony's affordable full-frame portrait prime with excellent autofocus and smooth bokeh.
The Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 was launched in 2017 as Sony's affordable portrait prime for the full-frame E-mount system. It provides the classic 85mm portrait perspective at f/1.8 with fast, reliable autofocus. Positioned well below the 85mm f/1.4 GM, it offers outstanding value for portrait photographers.
Optical quality is very good with sharp results from wide open in the centre and pleasing bokeh from nine rounded aperture blades. Autofocus via a double linear motor is fast, accurate, and quiet. Build is compact metal and plastic with a focus hold button and AF/MF switch. The lens is well-balanced on A7-series bodies.
Sony FE mount only, 67mm filter thread. The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM offers a wider aperture and slightly better optical quality at three times the price. The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is a compelling middle ground with wider aperture at a moderate premium.
Excellent value used. Check the AF motor, aperture blades, and front element. This lens has very few common issues and is well-built for its price. One of the best value portrait lenses in the Sony system and highly recommended as a first portrait prime.
