The Sony HXR-NX800 is a professional NXCAM handheld camcorder announced in August 2024 alongside the PXW-Z200, with which it shares its body and core imaging. It is the more affordable of the pair, aimed at wedding and event shooters, streamers and education users who do not need the Z200's broadcast trimmings.
It carries the same 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and AI processing unit, delivering subject-recognition autofocus with tracking and auto-framing, 4K up to 120fps and Full HD up to 240fps. The 20x power zoom covers 24-480mm equivalent, stretching further with Clear Image Zoom, and there is an electronic variable ND (1/4 to 1/128) with auto mode. Recording is in XAVC S-I 10-bit 4:2:2, XAVC HS-L and S-L flavours, with S-Cinetone and 709tone looks, dual-band Wi-Fi streaming, XLR audio and a new foldable viewfinder. It forgoes the Z200's 12G-SDI and MXF broadcast formats.
Its significance is bringing genuinely current mirrorless-class AF and slow motion to the sub-£3,000 pro camcorder bracket, reviving a category many had written off. As a 2024 release it is scarce second-hand in the UK, with the few listings coming from early adopters and demo stock.
Used buying is straightforward given the model's youth: prioritise bodies with remaining warranty or a dated receipt, and check for ex-demo status which can be excellent value. Confirm the foldable viewfinder and removable mic holder are present and undamaged, cycle the variable ND, test AI tracking AF on a moving subject, and update firmware. With so little between used and new pricing, only buy if the discount is meaningful against current UK retail.
