Sony's compact APS-C mirrorless with hybrid AF and apps — early E-mount with innovative features.
The Sony NEX-5R launched in 2012 as an updated compact APS-C mirrorless with the addition of hybrid AF (phase-detect on sensor) and PlayMemories Camera Apps — downloadable apps that extended camera functionality.
The 16.1MP APS-C sensor delivers good image quality. The hybrid AF with phase-detect pixels was a meaningful improvement over the contrast-detect-only NEX-5N. 10fps burst. Full HD 1080p 60p video. Touch AF via the LCD screen. Wi-Fi built in.
Compact body at 276g — remarkably small for APS-C. 3-inch tilting touchscreen. No EVF built in — optional accessory. WiFi for wireless transfer and remote shooting. PlayMemories Apps expandable. Sony E-mount.
Available used very cheaply. The A6000 succeeded the NEX naming and is dramatically better. PlayMemories Apps was discontinued. The hybrid AF was innovative for 2012. Historically interesting but functionally superseded. Check for smooth operation.
