The Sony PXW-Z200 is a professional handheld XDCAM camcorder announced in August 2024, the long-awaited successor to the Z150 and Z190 generation. It pairs a 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor with Sony's AI processing unit, bringing mirrorless-grade subject recognition autofocus to the fixed-lens camcorder format for the first time.
The new 20x power zoom covers 24-480mm equivalent, a far wider starting point than its predecessors, and the sensor readout supports 4K at up to 120fps and Full HD at 240fps. It records to dual CFexpress Type A/SD slots, offers S-Cinetone and 709tone looks, an electronic variable ND filter, 12G-SDI and HDMI outputs, four-channel audio via XLRs and the MI shoe, and built-in dual-band Wi-Fi with native streaming including auto-framing driven by the AI chip. Launch price was around £4,200 in the UK.
The Z200 is significant as Sony's statement that the handheld pro camcorder is not dead: it consolidates the Z150 and Z190 into one body and finally gives run-and-gun operators the tracking AF that mirrorless shooters have taken for granted. Being barely a year and a half old, it is only just beginning to appear on the UK used market, mostly from upgraders and hire companies rotating stock.
Used examples should still be near-mint, so treat them accordingly: verify remaining Sony warranty or proof of purchase date, check for hire-fleet markings or Velcro residue, and confirm the box includes the microphone holder, eyecup and hood. Test the AI autofocus tracking and auto-framing briefly, cycle the variable ND, and check firmware is current since early releases received meaningful AF updates. Prices remain close to new, so haggle with a current dealer new price in hand.
