Tamron's compact full-frame ultra-wide zoom for Sony FE — constant f/2.8 from 17-28mm in just 420g.
The Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD launched in 2019 as the first ultra-wide f/2.8 zoom designed natively for Sony full-frame E-mount. Paired with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 and 70-180mm f/2.8, it completes an affordable all-f/2.8 zoom trinity.
Optically very good — sharp across the frame from f/4 with impressive wide-open performance. Minimal distortion and chromatic aberration for an ultra-wide zoom. RXD stepping motor AF is fast and nearly silent. Well-suited to both stills and video.
Sony FE mount with 67mm filter thread — notably accepting front filters unlike many ultra-wides. Weighs just 420g — significantly lighter than the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM. No weather sealing claims. Minimum focus distance 19cm at 17mm. Internal zoom.
Common used and good value. The ability to use 67mm front filters is a real advantage for landscape photography with ND and polarising filters. The Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM is optically superior but twice the weight and price. Excellent value ultra-wide for Sony shooters.
