World's first 22.2x superzoom — 18-400mm in one lens — with VC stabilisation and HLD autofocus motor.
The Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD (2017) holds the record as the world's first 22.2x superzoom, covering 29-640mm equivalent on APS-C. It eliminates lens changes entirely for travel, at the cost of optical compromises inherent in such extreme zoom ratios.
Surprisingly good image quality for the zoom range. Centre sharpness is satisfying at most focal lengths. The long end softens — expected at 400mm on a superzoom. VC provides about 3.5 stops. HLD motor is fast and quiet.
Canon EF-S mount, 72mm filter thread. Also available in Nikon F. Di II = APS-C only. VC vibration compensation. HLD = High/Low torque modular Drive — faster than older motors. 710g weight. 45cm minimum focus.
Good used availability. Check VC and zoom ring smoothness. Test sharpness at 400mm — stop down to f/8 for best results. If you accept superzoom tradeoffs, there is nothing with more range in a single lens.
