Tamron's budget standard zoom for Nikon F — the 28-105mm with LD glass and AF.
The Tamron 28-105mm f/4-5.6 AF LD is a budget full-frame standard zoom for Nikon F mount, released around 1999. Covering a useful 28-105mm range with LD (Low Dispersion) glass for improved chromatic aberration control, it provided a modest step up from the most basic kit zooms while remaining very affordable.
Optical performance is adequate. Centre sharpness is acceptable at moderate focal lengths. The LD element provides better colour correction than completely basic alternatives. The variable aperture limits low-light use. Autofocus speed depends on the body's AF motor. A functional everyday zoom for casual photography in good light.
Nikon F mount. Filter thread is 58mm. Weight is approximately 310 grams — lightweight. Build quality is basic plastic. Screw-drive AF requires a body-mounted motor — will not autofocus on D3xxx/D5xxx bodies. No image stabilisation. The 28-105mm range is practical for a standard walk-around zoom.
Very cheap on the used market — often under £20. Check for smooth zoom and AF operation. The screw-drive AF limits compatibility with entry-level bodies. Not recommended when better Nikon-mount alternatives are available at similar prices. The Nikon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D is a significantly better choice.
