Tamron's compact fast telephoto zoom for Sony, lighter and shorter than the traditional 70-200mm.
The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A056) was released in 2020 as a compact and lighter-weight constant f/2.8 telephoto zoom for Sony FE full-frame bodies, covering 70-180mm rather than the traditional 70-200mm range. The 30mm shorter range was the primary trade-off enabling the substantially lighter construction compared to Sony's FE 70-200mm GM OSS (1,395g). At 810g the Tamron provides professional constant f/2.8 aperture in a more manageable weight for travel and all-day handheld use.
The optical design uses 19 elements in 14 groups. The 67mm filter thread is smaller than the 77mm of the Sony FE 70-200mm GM OSS — a lighter and more affordable filter tier. At 810g the lens is approximately 585g lighter than the GM OSS. Minimum focus distance of 0.85m. The VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor enables fast, near-silent AF suited for video. There is no Optical SteadyShot; stabilisation relies on body IBIS on compatible Sony bodies.
The Tamron 70-180mm's practical case is constant f/2.8 telephoto coverage at half the GM OSS weight, at the cost of 20mm reach at the long end. For event, portrait, and documentary photographers who need f/2.8 throughout the telephoto range but find 1,395g impractical for daily carry, the 810g Tamron provides a workable professional-tier alternative. The 180mm end versus 200mm is a meaningful difference only for subjects requiring the extra telephoto compression.
On the used market the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is available at moderate prices. Condition checks: VXD motor response across the zoom range, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for marks. No OSS means the lens depends on Sony body IBIS for stabilisation in video and handheld telephoto use. The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (2023) added VC (Vibration Compensation) at a higher price. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame and APS-C E-mount bodies.
