Tamron's compact mirrorless telephoto for Sony FE — 70-300mm with RXD motor at remarkably low weight.
The Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD launched in 2020 as a remarkably compact full-frame telephoto zoom for Sony FE mount. At just 545g it is significantly lighter than the Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G OSS while maintaining good optical quality.
Optically good — sharp in the centre throughout with acceptable edge performance. The RXD stepping motor AF is fast and quiet. The f/4.5-6.3 variable aperture is slow but expected for the compact size. Good close focus at 80cm at 70mm. Designed natively for Sony mirrorless.
Sony FE mount with 67mm filter thread. Just 545g — the lightest full-frame 70-300mm available. Moisture-resistant construction. Internal zoom — barrel length constant. Minimum focus distance 80cm at 70mm, 150cm at 300mm. Tamron Lens Utility compatible.
Available used at mid-range prices. The weight advantage is the standout feature — significantly lighter than Sony's own 70-300mm G. The slow maximum aperture at 300mm requires good light. For travel photographers wanting telephoto reach without the weight penalty.
