Tamron's early APS-C superzoom — Canon EF-S version of the 27-300mm equiv all-in-one travel zoom.
The Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro for Canon EF-S is the Canon mount variant of Tamron's early APS-C superzoom. Covering 29-320mm equivalent on Canon crop, it provides basic all-in-one convenience at minimal cost.
Optical quality is modest — acceptable in the centre at mid-focal lengths but soft at extremes. No image stabilisation makes handheld use at 200mm difficult. LD and aspherical elements help control aberrations. IF internal focusing keeps barrel length constant. Macro mode focuses to 45cm.
Canon EF-S mount with 62mm filter thread. Approximately 398g — lightweight for the range. No weather sealing. APS-C only. XR (Extra Refractive) glass enables compact design. The VC version which added stabilisation is a much better choice.
Very cheap used. The VC stabilised version is dramatically more practical. Canon's EF-S 18-200mm IS or the Sigma 18-200mm OS are both superior. Only worth considering at bargain basement prices where stabilisation isn't needed.
