Tamron's non-stabilised full-frame superzoom for Nikon — the 28-300mm without VC.
The Tamron AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical IF Macro is an earlier non-stabilised version of Tamron's full-frame superzoom for Nikon F. Covering 28-300mm without VC stabilisation, it provided maximum zoom range at minimum cost. The LD and aspherical elements help manage the optical compromises of the 10.7x zoom ratio.
Optical performance involves the expected superzoom compromises. Centre sharpness is acceptable at moderate focal lengths. The lack of VC stabilisation is the main limitation at longer focal lengths. The IF design prevents barrel extension. XR elements keep the lens compact. LD and aspherical elements control aberrations within the design constraints.
Nikon F mount, full-frame. Filter thread is 62mm. Weight is approximately 420 grams — light for a full-frame 28-300mm. Build quality is functional. No VC stabilisation — a significant practical limitation. The Macro designation allows closer focusing. The VC-equipped version (IDs 3915, 3821) is strongly preferred.
Very cheap on the used market. Check zoom creep and AF. The lack of VC makes this difficult to recommend when stabilised versions are available. Only of interest at extremely low prices. The VC PZD version is significantly better in every practical way.
