The Tamron AF 55-200mm f/4-5.6 Di II LD Macro launched around 2004 as a budget telephoto zoom for APS-C DSLRs. Covering 82.5-300mm equivalent on Canon, it provides basic telephoto reach for entry-level users at minimal cost.
Optical quality is basic — acceptable centre sharpness but soft at the edges and at 200mm wide open. LD (Low Dispersion) glass helps control chromatic aberration. Autofocus is motor-driven and adequate but not fast. No image stabilisation.
Available in Canon EF-S mount. 52mm filter thread. Very lightweight at approximately 295g. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 95cm with a useful 1:3.5 macro ratio. Di II designation means APS-C only — will vignette on full-frame.
Very cheap used — often under £20. Build quality is plastic and feels insubstantial. Only worth considering as an absolute budget option. The Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS STM is vastly superior with stabilisation and better optics for a modest premium.
