Tamron's long-running budget telephoto with macro mode, available across all DSLR mounts.
The Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD Macro has been produced in various iterations since the early 1990s. It is one of the cheapest telephoto zooms available across all major DSLR mounts. The macro mode at 180-300mm provides 1:2 magnification.
Optical quality is basic with acceptable sharpness at shorter focal lengths and noticeable softness above 200mm. The LD designation indicates Low Dispersion glass. There is no stabilisation. Autofocus is functional but slow.
Available in Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony A, and Pentax K mounts. Filter thread is 62mm. Multiple variants exist including LD, Di, and Di LD versions with minor optical updates. Any stabilised alternative is a better choice.
Very cheap used in all mounts. Check AF motor and macro mode engagement. The macro capability is the unique feature versus equally cheap alternatives. Any modern IS telephoto zoom is dramatically better for general telephoto work.
