Tamron's second-generation ultra-wide zoom with stabilisation — a top full-frame wide-angle option.
The Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 was released in 2018 as an update to the well-regarded original. It covers the ultra-wide range with a constant f/2.8 aperture, making it one of the few stabilised ultra-wide zooms available. It competes directly with the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 and Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 III.
Optical performance is excellent. Sharpness is very good across the frame even wide open, with outstanding centre performance. The G2 update improved coatings for better flare resistance — critical for a lens that shoots into the light regularly. VC stabilisation provides around 4.5 stops of correction, a significant advantage for handheld shooting at slow shutter speeds.
Available in Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sony A mounts. The bulbous front element means no front filter thread — rear gel filter holders are the only option. Weight is approximately 1,110 grams, making this a heavy lens. Build quality is excellent with moisture-resistant construction. The USD motor provides fast, quiet autofocus.
Good availability on the used market. Check for smooth zoom operation and clean front element — the bulbous design is vulnerable to damage. The original version is significantly cheaper if VC is not essential. Competes very well against the Canon and Nikon equivalents at a lower price point, making it a popular choice for landscape and architecture shooters.
