Tamron's first constant f/2.8 standard zoom with VC stabilisation for full-frame DSLRs.
The Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD was launched in 2012 as the first third-party 24-70mm f/2.8 with image stabilisation. By adding VC to the constant f/2.8 formula at a price significantly below Canon and Nikon alternatives, it offered a compelling value proposition for wedding and event photographers.
Optical quality is good with sharp centre performance and well-controlled distortion. VC provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation — a significant advantage over Canon and Nikon's first-party 24-70mm f/2.8 zooms of the era which lacked IS/VR. USD motor is fast and quiet.
Available in Canon EF, Nikon F, and Sony A mounts. Filter thread is 82mm. The G2 version launched in 2017 with significantly improved optics and should be preferred. The original remains a budget option with stabilisation.
Good value used. Check VC operation, USD motor, and AF calibration using the Tamron TAP-in console if available. The G2 version is substantially better optically and worth the premium. The original is justified only at significantly lower used prices.
