Tamron's stabilised fast standard prime — the SP 45mm f/1.8 VC for Canon EF with unique specification.
The Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD was released in 2015 as one of the first stabilised fast standard primes. At 45mm f/1.8 with VC vibration compensation, it offered a unique combination — fast aperture with stabilisation. The unusual 45mm focal length was chosen as an optimised 'ideal standard' perspective between 35mm and 50mm.
Optical performance is very good. Sharpness is excellent from f/1.8 — the SP tier ensures premium optics. VC provides approximately 3.5 stops — valuable for a standard prime, especially in low light. USD motor provides fast, quiet AF. The 45mm perspective is slightly wider than 50mm — favoured by some photographers as more natural.
Canon EF mount, full-frame. Filter thread is 67mm. Weight is approximately 540 grams. Build quality is solid SP professional tier with moisture-resistant construction. The combination of f/1.8, VC stabilisation, and SP optics was innovative. Also available in Nikon F. The 45mm is uncommon but photographers who use it often prefer it to 50mm.
Available at reasonable prices. Check VC and AF. An innovative lens — the stabilised fast standard concept was ahead of its time. The 45mm perspective grows on many users. The VC adds genuine practical value for handheld low-light work. The SP optics are genuinely excellent. An underappreciated lens.
