Tamron's excellent 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 — sharp, stabilised, and a genuine alternative to Canon and Nikon L/gold-ring.
The Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 (Model A025) was released approximately 2017 as the second-generation professional telephoto zoom, improving over the G1 with 5-stop VC (versus 4-stop), shorter 0.95m MFD (versus 1.3m), full weather sealing throughout, and enhanced AF speed. At 1,500g (Canon EF, with tripod mount) and 77mm filter thread. Twenty-three elements in 17 groups.
The optical design uses 23 elements in 17 groups. Nine circular aperture blades. The 77mm filter thread. At 1,500g with tripod mount the lens is substantial. Minimum focus distance of 0.95m. 5-stop VC (CIPA Mode 3 measured at 200mm; improvement from G1's 4 stops). USD motor provides fast, quiet AF. Constant f/2.8 aperture. Full-frame coverage. Full weather sealing.
The G2's primary improvements over the G1 (A009): VC increases from 4 to 5 stops CIPA; MFD shortens from 1.3m to 0.95m, enabling tighter portrait framing; full weather sealing replaces G1's single seal; and four control switches (AF/MF, VC on/off, VC mode, focus limit) versus two on G1. The 0.95m MFD provides 0.32x maximum magnification — practical for close portrait and detail shots at telephoto focal lengths.
On the used market the Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 is affordable for a stabilised professional telephoto zoom. Condition checks: VC engagement, USD AF response, weather sealing, 77mm front element for marks, and tripod collar rotation. Compatible with Canon EF or Nikon F full-frame and APS-C bodies.
