Tamron's original non-VC 17-50mm f/2.8 — hugely popular APS-C standard zoom without stabilisation.
The Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) launched in 2006 as the non-stabilised version of what became one of the best-selling third-party APS-C zooms. It offered constant f/2.8 at a fraction of first-party prices.
Optically good — sharp across the frame with constant f/2.8 providing professional speed. XR, LD, and aspherical elements control aberrations. IF internal focusing. SP designation — Tamron's premium tier. No VC stabilisation on this version.
Available for Canon EF-S and Nikon F DX mounts. 67mm filter thread. Approximately 434g — compact for f/2.8 zoom. No weather sealing. APS-C only. Minimum focus distance 27cm. SP build quality.
Available used very cheaply. The VC version added stabilisation and is strongly preferred. This non-VC original is a bargain for users who don't need stabilisation or have body-based IS. One of the most impactful third-party lenses in history.
