Tokina's fast APS-C ultra-wide zoom — constant f/2.8 from 16.5-24mm equivalent, a landscape favourite.
The Tokina AT-X 11-16mm f/2.8 Pro DX launched in 2008 as a fast ultra-wide zoom for APS-C DSLRs, covering 16.5-24mm equivalent on Canon. The constant f/2.8 aperture made it popular for astrophotography and low-light ultra-wide work at a competitive price.
Optically very good — sharp across the frame from f/4 with impressive centre performance even at f/2.8. Well-controlled distortion for an ultra-wide. The fast f/2.8 aperture is a real advantage for night sky photography. Internal focus motor provides quiet AF.
Available in Canon EF-S and Nikon F DX mounts. 77mm filter thread — accepts standard screw-on filters, a major advantage over bulbous ultra-wides. Weighs approximately 560g. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 30cm. One-touch focus clutch for MF switching.
Common used and good value. The Mark II improved coatings and added a rear element motor for Nikon. The limited 11-16mm zoom range is the main criticism — not very versatile. The Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 extended the range. Excellent for astrophotography on crop-sensor DSLRs.
