Tokina's constant f/4 APS-C ultra-wide — wider than the 11-16mm with more versatile range.
The Tokina AT-X 12-28mm f/4 Pro DX launched in 2013 as an update to the concept of constant-aperture ultra-wide zooms for APS-C, covering 18-42mm equivalent on Nikon DX. The wider 12mm and longer 28mm improved versatility over the earlier 11-16mm.
Optically good — sharp in the centre with decent edge performance at mid-apertures. The constant f/4 aperture is practical for landscape where stopping down is common. Internal focus motor. One-touch focus clutch for instant MF/AF switching. Multi-layer coatings.
Nikon F mount, DX format with 77mm filter thread. Approximately 530g. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 25cm. AT-X Pro build quality. The 12-28mm range is more versatile than the narrower 11-16mm or 11-20mm ranges.
Available used at budget to mid-range prices. The 12-28mm range provides more zoom versatility than the f/2.8 Tokinas. The constant f/4 is less useful for astrophotography than the 11-16mm f/2.8. For landscape photographers wanting wider range with consistent aperture.
