Topcon's fixed-prism RE-mount SLR — the RE-2, TTL metered, 1965.
The Topcon RE-2 was a 35mm film SLR made from 1965 as a lower-cost companion to the professional RE Super in Topcon's RE line. It used the Topcon RE bayonet and shared the family's TTL metering approach while adopting a fixed prism rather than the RE Super's interchangeable finder.
It is a single-lens-reflex camera for 35mm film on the Topcon RE mount. The RE-2 used TTL metering derived from the RE system and a mechanically controlled focal-plane shutter, operated in metered manual, so it fires without a battery, the cell powering only the meter. It kept the RE family's solid, all-metal construction.
It suits those who want the Topcon RE lens system and TTL metering in a more affordable, fixed-prism body than the RE Super. It handles as a well-built mid-range SLR of its era, sturdier than many rivals of the time.
On the used market the RE-2 is uncommon and Topcon RE lenses are limited. Check the foam seals and mirror-damper foam, confirm the mechanical shutter fires across all speeds without a battery, and test the meter, which was built for mercury cells. Inspect the prism for desilvering, check advance and rewind, and note that repair support for Topcon RE bodies is scarce.
