Topcon's affordable UV-mount SLR — the Uni, TTL metering, shutter-priority auto, 1964.
The Topcon Uni was a 35mm film SLR made from 1964 by Topcon as a more affordable body sold in some markets as the Topcon Auto 100. It used the Topcon UV bayonet, a different and simpler mount from the professional RE line, and brought TTL metering to a lower price point.
It is a single-lens-reflex camera for 35mm film on the Topcon UV mount. The Uni used TTL metering with a meter cell placed behind the mirror, similar in principle to the RE system, and a leaf-type behind-the-lens shutter, operated with shutter-priority automatic exposure. Its automatic exposure depends on battery power.
It suits users curious about Topcon's consumer line and the UV lens system, offering automatic exposure in a comparatively affordable 1960s SLR. Handling is straightforward, and the shutter-priority automation makes it easy to use for general and travel photography.
On the used market the Uni is uncommon and Topcon UV lenses are limited in supply. Check the foam seals and mirror-damper foam, confirm the shutter fires and the automatic exposure responds, and test the meter, which was designed for a mercury cell. Inspect the finder and film transport, and note that the behind-lens shutter and mirror-metering make specialist repair difficult, with parts scarce.
