Viltrox's budget autofocus 50mm for Nikon Z — a surprisingly capable fast prime at a bargain price.
The Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a budget full-frame autofocus prime for the Nikon Z mount system. Released around 2022, it offers the classic 50mm focal length with a fast f/1.8 aperture and full electronic communication with Nikon Z bodies including AF, EXIF data, and aperture control — all at a fraction of the price of Nikon's own Z 50mm f/1.8 S.
Optical performance is good for the price. Sharpness is respectable from f/1.8 in the centre and very good by f/2.8. The ED and aspherical elements help control chromatic aberration and spherical aberration. Bokeh is smooth and pleasant. Autofocus uses a stepping motor that is reasonably quick and quiet, functional for both stills and video work.
Nikon Z mount with full electronic communication. Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 350 grams — compact and well-balanced on Z5, Z6, and Z7 bodies. Build quality is decent with a metal barrel. No weather sealing and no image stabilisation — rely on Nikon's in-body VR. The focus ring is smooth with linear response.
Good availability on the used market at very low prices. Check AF accuracy and consistency. An excellent budget option for Nikon Z shooters who want a fast fifty without paying for the optically superior but much more expensive Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S. Also a great backup lens or travel prime.
