Viltrox's budget 85mm-equivalent portrait prime for X-mount — f/1.4 with fast AF at a fraction of the Fuji price.
The Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.4 is a budget portrait prime for APS-C mirrorless systems, providing 84mm equivalent on Fujifilm X-mount. It launched around 2020 and quickly gained popularity as an affordable alternative to the Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R for portrait work.
Optically good for the price — sharp from f/2.8 with pleasant bokeh at f/1.4. Vignetting and chromatic aberration are visible wide open but clear by f/2.8. Stepping motor AF is quiet and acceptably fast. Eye-detect AF works with compatible camera bodies.
Fujifilm X mount with 52mm filter thread. Weighs approximately 320g. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 60cm. 9 rounded aperture blades. Also available for Sony E, Nikon Z, and Canon RF mounts. USB-C port for firmware updates.
Very common used and excellent value — often under £100. The Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 is optically superior but costs 5-6x more. Check for firmware updates via USB-C — Viltrox improves AF regularly. Some copies show AF inconsistency — test before committing.
