Vivitar — 35-200mm f/3-4.5 wide-range travel zoom, sold across several 1980s SLR mounts
The Vivitar 35-200mm f/3-4.5 offered an unusually wide zoom range for a 1980s consumer lens, spanning wide-angle to telephoto in one barrel with a comparatively fast wide-end aperture. It was sold as an all-in-one travel lens for SLR owners wanting to avoid carrying multiple lenses.
It is a manual-focus zoom with a variable maximum aperture from f/3 at 35mm to f/4.5 at 200mm, fitted with an automatic diaphragm for open-aperture metering. Vivitar manufactured the optical design across several interchangeable SLR lens mounts common in the 1980s market.
Covering such a wide focal range in one lens involves compromises, and sharpness and contrast vary noticeably across the zoom, generally strongest in the middle of the range and softer at both extremes. It suits travel and general documentary use more than critical landscape or portrait work.
Given the wide range and consumer-grade construction, used copies vary considerably in condition. Check zoom creep and smoothness through the full range, inspect for internal dust or haze given the long optical path, and confirm which mount fitting is attached before purchase.
