Viewfinderless Voigtlander L39 body, the cheapest Leica-mount platform for wide-angle external-finder shooting.
The Voigtlander Bessa L is a viewfinderless M39 screw-mount rangefinder body from 1999, designed to be used exclusively with external viewfinders for wide-angle and ultra-wide lenses. The removal of the internal viewfinder creates the most compact possible M39-compatible body.
The camera accepts all L39/M39 screw-mount lenses and, via adapter, Leica M-mount lenses. The viewfinderless design means composition requires an external viewfinder — making the camera most practical with wide-angle lenses where external finders are commonly used anyway.
Build quality is functional Cosina/Voigtlander with reliable mechanical construction. The camera provides accurate TTL metering for exposure guidance, and the simplified design keeps the body remarkably compact and lightweight.
The Bessa L offers the most affordable L39-mount body on the used market, providing a functional platform for wide-angle Leica thread-mount and adapted M-mount lenses at a fraction of any Leica body cost.
