Voigtlander's compact 21mm for Leica M — the affordable Color-Skopar ultra-wide for rangefinder shooters.
The Voigtlander Color-Skopar 21mm f/3.5 Aspherical VM is a compact ultra-wide prime for Leica M-mount rangefinder cameras. At 21mm, it provides a dramatic 92-degree field of view — one of the widest options for M-mount. The Color-Skopar designation indicates a more affordable optical design compared to the faster Nokton and Ultron alternatives.
Optical performance is very good for the compact size. Sharpness is impressive when stopped down and respectable at f/3.5. The aspherical element helps control distortion and aberrations. Colour rendition is neutral and accurate. The f/3.5 aperture is modest but adequate for landscape and architecture where the lens is typically stopped down anyway.
Leica M mount — note that at 21mm, the lens sits outside the rangefinder's coupled focusing range on most M bodies, requiring zone focusing or live view. Filter thread is 39mm (E39). Weight is approximately 135 grams — exceptionally compact and lightweight. Build quality is excellent with precision metal construction by Cosina in Japan.
Available on the used market at reasonable prices — much cheaper than Leica's own 21mm options. Check for smooth focus ring and clean optics. An excellent compact ultra-wide for M-mount shooters who value portability. Zone focusing at f/5.6-8 is highly practical at this focal length. Also adapts well to mirrorless cameras for a tiny ultra-wide option.
