Yashica's Minister D — fixed-lens 35mm rangefinder, mechanical shutter, CdS meter, 1963.
The Yashica Minister D, from 1963, was a later model in Yashica's Minister line of fixed-lens 35mm rangefinders. It updated the earlier Minister, notably by using a CdS meter in place of selenium, and continued as a mid-priced general-purpose rangefinder.
This is a 35mm coupled-rangefinder camera with a fixed 45mm Yashinon lens and a mechanical leaf shutter. Exposure is manual, guided by a built-in CdS meter, which requires a battery, while the shutter itself is mechanical and fires without power. The photographer sets aperture and shutter speed directly.
The Minister D suits general and travel photography for users who want a solid manual rangefinder with a battery-powered light meter for more reliable readings than a selenium cell. It handles simply, with a bright rangefinder for focus and full manual exposure control, in a fairly heavy metal body.
When inspecting one, test the CdS meter and note that the original design used a mercury cell, so a substitute may be needed. Check the lens for haze and fungus, confirm the leaf shutter and aperture blades move freely, and verify rangefinder patch contrast and alignment. Replace perished light seals before use.
