Yongnuo's Canon EF mount budget fifty — the cheapest AF fast prime for Canon DSLR shooters.
The Yongnuo YN 50mm f/1.8 for Canon EF is an ultra-budget autofocus fast prime designed as a direct clone of Canon's EF 50mm f/1.8 II. It offers the classic nifty fifty experience at an astonishingly low price — often less than half the cost of Canon's own budget fifty. It provides full EF-mount electronic communication including AF, EXIF data, and aperture control.
Optical performance is basic. Sharpness is soft wide open at f/1.8, improving to acceptable by f/2.8 and good by f/4. The five-blade aperture produces pentagonal bokeh highlights that are not as pleasing as Canon's seven-blade STM version. Chromatic aberration is noticeable at wider apertures. The AF motor works but is noisy and occasionally hunts.
Canon EF mount with full electronic communication. Filter thread is 52mm. Weight is approximately 160 grams. Build quality is very basic all-plastic construction with a plastic lens mount — handle with care. No weather sealing. Quality control can be inconsistent between copies — some samples perform noticeably better than others.
Extremely cheap on the used market — often under £25. Check AF carefully as it is the most common point of failure. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a dramatically better lens at only a modest price increase and should be the default choice for anyone who can afford the difference. The Yongnuo is strictly a last-resort budget option.
