Zeiss's compact 35mm for Sony FE — the Sonnar T* pancake with outstanding optical quality.
The Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA (SEL35F28Z) was launched in 2013 as one of the original native full-frame E-mount lenses. Developed with Zeiss, it provides a compact wide-angle prime with Zeiss's celebrated T* multi-coating and Sonnar optical design. The nearly pancake dimensions made it ideal for the compact Sony a7 series cameras.
Optical performance is very good. Sharpness is excellent from f/2.8, benefiting from the simple requirements of a moderate aperture. The T* coating provides outstanding contrast and flare resistance. Colour rendition has the precise, neutral Zeiss character. Distortion is minimal. The Sonnar design delivers excellent micro-contrast — images have a distinctive clarity.
Sony FE mount with full electronic communication. Filter thread is 49mm — very compact. Weight is approximately 120 grams — one of the lightest full-frame AF primes. Build quality is good with a metal barrel. No weather sealing. The compact size makes it one of the most pocketable full-frame AF lens options. Autofocus is functional but not the fastest.
Available on the used market at moderate prices. Check AF operation. The Zeiss name and T* coating justify a premium over budget alternatives. An excellent compact everyday lens for Sony shooters who value optical quality in a minimal package. The Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM or Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art are the upgrade path for those wanting faster aperture.
