Zeiss's ultra-wide AF prime for Sony FE — 18mm f/2.8 with Batis autofocus and OLED display.
The ZEISS Batis 18mm f/2.8 launched in 2016 as the widest prime in the Batis range for Sony FE mount. At 18mm it provides an extreme 99-degree field of view with Zeiss T* optics and autofocus — a rare combination.
Optically very good — sharp from f/4 with Zeiss T* coating for excellent flare control. The Distagon-type optical formula handles the extreme wide angle well. Linear motor AF is fast and quiet. Some barrel distortion correctable in software.
Sony FE mount with 77mm filter thread — accepts standard screw-on filters at 18mm, a practical advantage. Approximately 330g — compact. Weather-sealed. OLED display showing focus distance and DOF. Minimum focus distance 25cm.
Available used at mid-range to professional prices. The 77mm filter thread at 18mm is valuable for landscape ND and polariser use. The Batis line is being phased out as Zeiss shifts focus. For Sony FE shooters wanting Zeiss ultra-wide quality with AF and filter capability.
