Zeiss's cinema standard — the CP.2 50mm T2.1 for PL-mount professional production.
The Zeiss CP.2 50mm T2.1 is the standard focal length member of the Zeiss Compact Prime 2 cinema series in PL mount. At 50mm T2.1, it provides the most-used cinema perspective with Zeiss optical quality. The 50mm is typically the first lens purchased in any cinema prime set — essential for dialogue, medium shots, and general coverage.
Optical performance is excellent — Zeiss cinema quality. Sharpness is very good from T2.1. The 50mm is typically the sharpest in any prime set. Focus breathing is minimal. The T* coating provides outstanding contrast. Colour rendering matches across the CP.2 range. The CP.2 50mm served countless professional productions worldwide.
PL mount with optional mount interchange. Full-frame coverage. 114mm front diameter — cinema matte box standard. Weight is approximately 1,000 grams. Build quality is outstanding Zeiss precision with geared rings and luminous markings. The CP.3 successor improved coatings and breathing but the CP.2 optics remain excellent.
Available on the used cinema market at moderate Zeiss pricing. Check geared rings and optical elements. The workhorse of any CP.2 set — the 50mm sees more use than any other focal length. The CP.3 upgrade is preferred for new purchases but the CP.2 50mm remains a capable and more affordable option.
