Zeiss's premium ultra-wide for Canon EF — the Distagon 15mm f/2.8 with outstanding optics.
The Zeiss Distagon T* 15mm f/2.8 ZE is a premium manual focus ultra-wide prime for Canon EF mount. Part of Zeiss's ZE/ZF.2 lens series, it provides dramatic 110-degree coverage on full frame with Zeiss's celebrated T* multi-coating. The Distagon designation indicates a retrofocus design optimised for SLR camera use with sufficient back-focus distance.
Optical performance is excellent — Zeiss quality at its finest. Sharpness is very good from f/2.8 and outstanding by f/5.6. The T* coating provides exceptional contrast and flare resistance. Distortion is well-controlled for a 15mm lens. Coma control is very good for astrophotography. Colour rendition has the precise, neutral Zeiss character with superb micro-contrast.
Canon EF mount with electronic aperture communication but manual focus only — no AF. Filter thread is not available — the bulbous front element prevents standard filters. Weight is approximately 820 grams — heavy for a prime. Build quality is outstanding with full metal construction and a smooth, precision focus ring. Also available in ZF.2 (Nikon F) mount.
Available on the used market at moderate prices — the ZE/ZF.2 series has been partially superseded by Zeiss Milvus and mirrorless alternatives. Check for smooth focus ring and clean front element. An exceptional ultra-wide for Canon shooters who value Zeiss optical quality and enjoy manual focus. The f/2.8 speed makes it useful for astrophotography.
