Zenit's classic SLR — the 12XP with M42 mount for universal lens compatibility.
The Zenit 12XP is a 35mm SLR from KMZ using M42 screw mount, one of the later M42-based Zenit designs. The Zenit series was the Soviet Union's primary consumer SLR camera line, produced at KMZ in Krasnogorsk.
The Zenit 12XP uses M42 screw mount for the extensive M42 lens ecosystem, provides TTL metering with LED indicators, and a mechanical focal-plane shutter. XP indicates a specific production variant with certain feature updates.
The M42 mount gives the Zenit 12XP access to all M42 lenses including the full Asahi Takumar range, Carl Zeiss Jena Praktica lenses, and Pentacon/Pentax glass. Soviet Helios and Jupiter lenses provide further affordable options. M42 adapters make all these lenses usable on modern cameras.
Test M42 coupling with known M42 lenses. Check shutter speeds and TTL metering. Inspect viewfinder and mirror mechanism. Test film transport.
