Zenit's basic SLR — the EM with simple mechanical design in M42 mount.
The Zenit EM is a 35mm SLR from KMZ using M42 screw mount, representing one of the standard Zenit body designs of the 1970s–1980s. The EM designation indicates a specific production variant within the Zenit manual SLR range.
The Zenit EM uses M42 screw mount for full compatibility with the M42 lens ecosystem, provides TTL metering, and a mechanical focal-plane shutter with manual exposure control. Standard Soviet SLR construction.
The M42 mount gives the Zenit EM access to all M42 lenses including Takumar, Zeiss Jena, and Soviet Helios/Jupiter optics. M42 adapters enable modern mirrorless use of all these lenses.
Test M42 coupling with known lenses. Check shutter speeds and TTL metering. Inspect mirror mechanism and viewfinder. Check film transport.
