Canon's original L-series 100-400mm push-pull zoom — a wildlife classic with IS and professional build.
The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM launched in 1998 as Canon's first L-series super-telephoto zoom, featuring a distinctive push-pull zoom mechanism and image stabilisation. It became a wildlife and sports photography staple for two decades.
Optically good — sharp in the centre at most focal lengths with acceptable edge performance. IS provides approximately 2 stops of stabilisation. Ring-type USM motor delivers fast, silent AF. The push-pull zoom mechanism is divisive — fast to operate but can ingest dust.
Canon EF mount with 77mm filter thread. Weighs 1380g. L-series weather sealing. Push-pull zoom mechanism with tension adjustment ring. Tripod collar included. 1.4x extender compatible for 140-560mm. Minimum focus distance 180cm.
Available used at mid-range prices. The Mark II (2014) dramatically improved optics, AF, and added conventional rotating zoom. The push-pull mechanism is the main concern — dust ingress is common. Check for smooth zoom action and clear optics. A classic that served thousands of wildlife photographers.
