Canon's budget standard zoom from the 1990s — basic 28-80mm range bundled with consumer EOS bodies.
The Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 is one of several budget Canon standard zooms produced in the 1990s, commonly bundled with entry-level EOS film cameras. Multiple versions exist with minor optical and cosmetic differences — all provide basic 28-80mm coverage.
Optical quality is basic — acceptable centre sharpness but soft edges. Variable f/3.5-5.6 aperture. Various versions had different AF motor types — some with USM, some without. No image stabilisation. Adequate for casual film photography of its era.
Canon EF mount with 58mm filter thread. Approximately 200g — very lightweight. Full-frame coverage. Plastic construction. Minimum focus distance approximately 38cm. Multiple Mark versions exist with slight differences.
Extremely cheap used — often under £10. Any modern kit zoom vastly outperforms it. Only useful as a disposable lens for testing bodies or as a paper weight. Check zoom mechanism — many have sticky or loose zoom rings after decades of use.
