Canon's basic EF kit zoom — the 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II without USM motor.
The Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II is a basic full-frame kit zoom without USM — using Canon's micro-motor AF which is audible and slower. One of Canon's most mass-produced kit lenses for entry-level film and early digital SLRs. The Mark II improved on the original with minor refinements. Adequate for learning but basic in every respect.
Optical performance is basic. Centre sharpness is acceptable when stopped down. The micro-motor AF is audible and slower than USM. No image stabilisation. Variable aperture limits low-light use. The 28-80mm range covers the essential standard zoom spectrum. Adequate for casual daytime photography but not for demanding work.
Canon EF mount, full-frame. Filter thread is 58mm. Weight is approximately 200 grams — lightweight plastic. Build quality is the most basic Canon offered. No USM, no IS, no weather sealing. The plastic construction including mount on most versions requires careful handling. Multiple production runs exist with minor variations.
Almost worthless on the used market — often free with camera bodies. Not recommended for purchase. The USM version (ID 4147) or any IS-equipped alternative is significantly better. Only of relevance bundled free with a camera body where it adds marginal value as a basic walk-around.
