Canon's flagship 600mm — the original EF 600mm f/4L IS with fluorite elements.
The Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM was released in 1999 as Canon's flagship super-telephoto prime. At 600mm f/4 with IS stabilisation and fluorite elements, it represented the ultimate in Canon's super-telephoto engineering. Used by professional wildlife and sports photographers worldwide. The 600mm reach at f/4 provides unmatched subject isolation.
Optical performance is outstanding — L-series flagship with fluorite elements for exceptional chromatic correction. Sharpness is superb from f/4. IS provides approximately 2 stops of correction — the first generation IS at this focal length. Ring-type USM provides fast, precise AF. Compatible with Canon 1.4x and 2x extenders for 840mm and 1200mm reach.
Canon EF mount. Rear drop-in filter. Weight is approximately 5,360 grams — extremely heavy. Build quality is outstanding L-series with weather sealing. Hard case and tripod collar included. The Mark II (2011) and Mark III significantly improved weight and IS — this original is the heaviest version.
Available at lower prices than Mark II/III — the weight premium has reduced demand. Check IS, AF, and all elements. The original 600mm f/4L IS remains a superb optic — the weight is the main practical drawback versus newer versions. Requires a sturdy tripod or gimbal. Still produces outstanding images at 600mm f/4.
