Canon's stabilised f/4 telephoto zoom, the lightweight professional's favourite for travel.
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM was released in 2006 alongside the non-IS version, adding Image Stabilisation rated at 4 stops to Canon's lightweight f/4 telephoto zoom. The IS mechanism adds approximately 55g over the non-IS version, bringing the total to 760g — still substantially lighter than the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. For photographers working frequently handheld in lower light or at the full 200mm extension, the IS version extends practical working conditions in a way the non-IS cannot match. An IS II version (2018) followed with revised IS algorithms and 9 blades.
The optical design uses 20 elements in 15 groups, including one fluorite and two UD elements. The 67mm filter thread is the L-series f/4 telephoto standard, consistent with the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L. At 760g the lens is heavier than the non-IS version but considerably lighter than the f/2.8 alternatives — the practical argument for f/4 over f/2.8 in weight-sensitive applications. Minimum focus distance is 1.2m throughout the zoom range. IS provides 4 stops of compensation, effective for static and slow-moving subjects handheld. Eight rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh at wider apertures. The ring-type USM motor is fast and silent with full-time manual focus override. L-series dust and moisture sealing is built in.
In use the IS version's advantage over the non-IS is most apparent at the 200mm end: handheld shots in moderate light that would require a tripod with the non-IS are achievable with IS engaged. For landscape, wildlife, and travel photography where weight matters but light conditions vary, the IS version provides meaningfully broader working conditions. Constant f/4 aperture is consistent across the zoom range, simplifying exposure management. Optical performance is strong from f/4 throughout.
On the used market the IS version commands a modest premium over the non-IS that the IS capability typically justifies. Condition checks: IS engagement (listen for activation, observe stabilised viewfinder image), ring USM response, L-series sealing at the zoom barrel. The IS II (2018) has improved IS algorithms and 9 rounded blades; the price premium determines whether the IS refinement justifies upgrading. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLRs and via EF-RF adapter on EOS R bodies.
