Canon's early EF-S kit zoom with USM — the standard lens bundled with millions of Canon APS-C DSLRs.
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II USM is one of Canon's most produced lenses, bundled as the kit zoom with millions of Canon APS-C DSLRs including the 350D, 400D, and early Rebels. It covers 29-88mm equivalent — the standard walkaround range for APS-C.
Optical quality is basic — acceptable centre sharpness but soft at the edges and at 55mm. The USM motor is the micro-USM type, providing reasonably quiet autofocus without full-time manual override. No image stabilisation. Adequate for beginners and casual use.
Canon EF-S mount with 58mm filter thread. Weighs approximately 190g — very lightweight. Plastic construction including mount. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 28cm. APS-C only — incompatible with full-frame Canon bodies.
Extremely common used — often given away with camera bodies. The IS STM versions that followed are dramatically better with stabilisation and smoother AF. Only worth using if it comes free with a camera purchase. Check for sticky zoom rings on older copies.
