Canon's early APS-C kit zoom — the EF-S 18-55mm with USM motor but no IS.
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM is an early version of Canon's APS-C kit zoom with USM autofocus but no image stabilisation. One of the first EF-S lenses, it covered the standard 29-88mm equivalent range. The USM motor provided faster, quieter AF than the non-USM versions but the lack of IS limits handheld capability.
Optical performance is basic kit-zoom quality. Centre sharpness is acceptable. The USM motor differentiates this from cheaper non-USM versions. No image stabilisation — the later IS, IS II, and IS STM versions added critical stabilisation. Adequate for casual daytime photography with the USM AF advantage.
Canon EF-S mount, APS-C. Filter thread is 58mm. Weight is approximately 190 grams — lightweight. Build quality is basic plastic. The USM motor is the only distinguishing feature. The later IS STM version is dramatically better with both stabilisation and silent stepping motor AF for video. No weather sealing.
Almost worthless on the used market. Check USM motor and zoom. Not recommended — the IS STM version is better in every way at similar prices. Only of interest bundled free with a camera. The USM AF is the sole advantage over completely basic alternatives.
